Service Description

Overlockers are super useful machines for finishing all of your sewing projects, and they are also the best machines to use to construct stretch knit fabrics. Stretch knit, such as jersey and sweatshirt, is super comfy and easy to wear, making it perfect for all kinds of casual garments, leisurewear and children's clothes. However, sewing it requires a completely different approach to sewing a woven fabric. In this full day workshop we learn all about using overlockers for basic seam finishing, and also how to create stretch garments at home that work well and look great. An overlocker is the best way to achieve a really professional result when sewing stretch. However, you can also complete all of the techniques using a standard domestic sewing machine, and we will cover all of the setting adjustments required for this in class, so that if you don't have an overlocker yet, you can decide after the class whether it is an investment that you would like to make. Overlockers can seem complicated and a bit intimidating, so in the morning session we try to demystify these super machines by learning all about how to use them, including: Threading up and changing thread colour Balancing the thread tensions Understanding differentials and when to change them Removing overlock stitches Machine maintenance After a short lunchbreak, we will discuss the different types of stretch fabrics and how to work with them, and then complete a number of essential stretch techniques, including: Sewing a stretch seam Creating a mock hem Attaching a gathered cuff Finishing a stretch neckline Twin needle hems The aim of this comprehensive workshop is to leave you feeling confident about going home and successfully undertaking your own stretch sewing projects at home. Class size is kept small so that everyone can get the individual attention that they need. There will be written notes provided, with accompanying pictures to remind you of each technique covered. Ideally, you should bring your own sewing machine or overlocker, but you are welcome to use the equipment in the studio if this is not possible. Peebles high street is a 5 minute walk away, with lots of shops and cafes to visit on the lunchbreak. Tea and coffee and biscuits will also be provided throughout the day to keep us all going.
